Dynamic DIY Training

The Dynamic DIY program is designed to be highly interactive in helping people train their own dog.  Most of the content is related to retrievers but those wishing to do obedience and e-collar conditioning with non-retriever breeds are welcome too.  The majority of participants are wanting a solid hunting companion, hunt test dog, field trial performer, and of course an obedient family dog.  How the program works is that participants receive short videos of each task broken down into small manageable steps.  Participants in turn send short video clips via cell phone to Tim for review and feedback.  Videos are typically sent back and forth on a daily basis.  This daily feedback system helps dogs and trainers to stay on track and to catch mistakes when they are small and haven’t become ingrained or a bad habit.  Also, this allows the material to focus on that particular dog versus the normal book or video that is very general and non-specific.  Problems can be for a variety of reasons, such as confusion vs non-compliance.  Two different dogs making the same mistake could be for two different reasons.  This is why sending the daily videos to Tim is such a crucial part of him giving you accurate feedback.

The ideal human candidate is motivated, wants to learn, asks questions, is open-minded, and above all wants to train their own dog.  The ideal canine participant has been well socialized and has followed some sort of puppy program like the DVD ‘Training a Retriever Puppy with Bill Hillmann,’ or similar.  The Dynamic DIY would start in earnest at around 6 months of age with obedience and e-collar conditioning, conditioned hold and fetch commands, e-collar fetch, basic marking mechanics, walking fetch, pile work, the modified T, water T or swim-by, pattern blinds, and basic advanced work.  Much of the instruction involves being able to understand your dog’s mental state and this helps owners become better dog people.
